OTHER METHODS
Intrauterine Device (IUD)
Another method of birth control is the IntraUterine Device (IUD). A "T" shaped plastic device is inserted into the uterus in the doctor's office. A thread that hangs from the uterus into the vagina indicates that the IUD is still in place within the uterus. It is believed that the IUD works due to a reaction between copper (found within the IUD) and the uterus. This reaction prevents the implantation of a fertilized egg. IUDs can be changed annually, or left in place for up to 4 years, depending on the type. IUD users often have cramping and heavy menstrual flows. There is a risk of the uterus tearing upon insertion and removal of the IUD.
